Visual novels move through dialogue and narration, so most of what the player does is read and then choose at the decisive moments. Combat and stat systems are usually absent or minimal, which puts everything on script density, character art and CG count — how good the game is comes down almost entirely to how well the story is written.
The audience wants immersion and characterisation, and will happily spend hours on one well-written relationship. The low barrier to entry helps: no execution skill required, easy to stop and resume. Branching design varies enormously, from one or two decisive nodes to routes splitting continuously. Our coverage describes each title’s narrative direction and whether it is fully voiced, marks the branch points, ending count and how CG completion works, alongside hands-on reviews.
