Taiwanese publisher Mango Party has announced that The Starborn Return, a story-driven side-scrolling tower defense game developed by Backflip WildCAT, launches on Steam on September 11, 2026. The game folds unit deployment and character raising into one loop, and ships with five languages (Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, English and Korean) plus Japanese voice acting
A sealed princess finds the boy who was looking for a place to die
Sid lost both parents to the war and has been searching for somewhere to end it all. The one who finds him is a sealed princess of the star abyss. Her goal is simple enough: take back the stolen Star Power, and Sid is the only person she can lean on. That is how the journey to reclaim the Star Stone begins
Along the way Sid meets the princess from the stars, learns to wield the Star Power, and fights side by side with the women he encounters
Tower defense meets romance adventure, and everything you meet can join you
The core loop is side-scrolling tower defense. You take on stages as the story progresses, deploying captured monsters and hero characters on the field, and win by breaking the enemy base. The pool of deployable units keeps growing, so building a lineup around each unit role is what carries you through
The hero characters are the women you meet in the story. Beyond sending them out to fight, they can fire special skills: the protagonist pours energy into them, and the follow-up attack can swing a losing battle in one stroke
The formation screen lays out every unit role and skill you have, while stages advance through chapter nodes
Six heroines to raise, and to fall for
Six heroines join the story, each with her own flavour. Raising them makes them stronger in battle, and it also opens the door to romance and all sorts of interactions
Elf, the princess from the star abyss
She shares your goal: bring down Baldona and take back the Star Stone that channels the Star Power. A little forceful, hates losing, and trusts you more than she lets on
Rufina, the senior who quietly holds a crush on you
Easygoing and sociable, seemingly unbothered by what others feel, yet she still wants to be seen as a woman
Sekhmet, the playful and wild beast girl
Bright and impatient, acts on impulse, hard to keep still, and short on patience. Both her temperament and her instincts lean feline
Mephis, the innocent slime girl
She acts purely on instinct and wants to swallow anything she sees. She likes being bare and would rather not wear clothes at all
Zero, the machine girl who lost her emotions
Quiet, with few thoughts of her own, and moves only for the goals and orders that others hand her
Aurora, the ever-embracing foster mother
Warmth and acceptance come naturally to her. She keeps her eyes half-closed, and she is easy to fool
Fully voiced heroine routes and 30 fully animated HCG sets
Story scenes are fully voiced, so the cast carries the drama and the characters land harder. In H scenes the game switches to fully animated HCG, showing each heroine across a range of poses
